Pillow Queens par Faolán Carey
En découvrant leur Holy Show, nous les pensâmes américaine, affiliées à Sharon Van Etten, Phoebe Bridgers ou toute figure de la scène indie folk rock étasunienne. Il n’en est rien. Ces Pillow Queens sont Irlandaises.
On découvre à peine ce quatuor composé de Sarah Corcoran (voix, guitare, basse), Rachel Lyons (batterie, voix), Cathy McGuinness (guitare, voix), Pamela Connolly (voix, guitare, basse) et qui opère depuis 2016. Le groupe a sorti, via Specialist Subject Records, deux EPs depuis : Calm Girls (2016) et State of the State (2018). Deux moyens formats de bonne facture qui redonnent des couleurs à la Britpop.
Le 25 septembre la formation présentera In Waiting, son premier album. Un disque qui semble taillé pour essayer de s’imposer Outre-atlantique.
Holy Show, dernier single, est soutenu par un clip réalisé par Kate Dolan. La vidéaste qui mit en scène Gay Girls (voir ci-dessous) explique comment elle a abordé cette nouvelle réalisation :
« Myself and the girls are all queer so when they asked me to direct something for Holy Show we all felt it was time that we made a video that had some positive queer representation. There are often depictions of queer women in the media that really upset me. We are often observed through a male gaze by male directors. They are often hyper sexualised. We wanted to create something that really captured the joyful intimacy between queer women through a female gaze. »
